Dry Needling Therapy

Dry Needling Therapy

Dry needling is an evidence-based treatment performed by trained physical therapists to relieve muscle pain, reduce tension, and restore normal movement. Using a very thin, sterile filament needle, the therapist targets myofascial trigger points—commonly known as muscle knots—to help release tight muscles and improve function. The technique is called “dry” because no medication or injection is involved.

How Dry Needling Works

When the needle is inserted into a trigger point, it may produce a brief muscle twitch response. This natural reaction helps relax the muscle, reduce pain, and restore normal movement patterns.

Conditions That May Benefit

Dry needling is commonly used to treat a variety of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

Muscle strains and overuse injuries

Neck and back pain

Shoulder pain

Tension headaches and migraines

Whiplash injuries

Tennis elbow

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction

Sports-related injuries

Chronic muscle tightness and trigger points

What to Expect During Treatment

Most people experience little to no discomfort as the needle enters the skin. When a trigger point is reached, you may feel a brief muscle twitch, cramping sensation, or dull ache—this is a normal response and often indicates the muscle is releasing.

After treatment, it’s common to experience mild muscle soreness similar to what you might feel after exercise. Some people may also notice minor bruising or temporary fatigue, which typically resolves within a day or two.

Part of a Comprehensive Treatment Plan

Dry needling is most effective when combined with other physical therapy interventions. Your therapist may incorporate stretching, strengthening exercises, manual therapy, movement training, and education to address the underlying cause of your symptoms and help you achieve lasting results.
